2017 Centralia Class 3A Regional Champions

Coming into the 2016-17 basketball season, the Lions knew they were going to have to deal with something they hadn't done before...move up to class 3A in the playoffs. But move up they did and the Lady Lions earned their very first regional championship Thursday night beating the Centralia Annies 49-45.

In front of a fantastic Carterville crowd, the Lady Lions showed some nervousness as they held an 11 point lead with just over three minutes left in the game, and saw that lead dwindle down to 2. But with under ten seconds left, the Lions got a breakaway pass to Hanna Schulmeister, who made the layup and the Lady Lions get the win.

Congratulations to Matt Crain, Steve Cowen and all the Lady Lions on a fantastic season so far. Next up, the ladies will play Tuesday night in the Waterloo Sectional. They are 27-3 on the season.

Head coach Matt Crain was very proud of his team after the win.

The Carterville Lions hit the road tonight to take on a very tough Pinckneyville Panther team that will be celebrating their upper seniors on Senior Night.

The Lions are coming off a win over the Harrisburg Bulldogs on Tuesday night 62-56.

It was the Lions very own Senior night as Taylor Heil, Brendan Beasley and Blake Jackson played their last regular season come game.

Taylor Heil was a man on fire, as 17 of his game high 25 points came in the second and fourth quarters. Brendan Beasley was the only other Lion in double digits. The Bulldogs were paced by the impressive Isaiah Saulsberry who scored a game high 29. He scored 14 points in the fourth quarter before fouling out late in the game.

After the game I had a chance to talk to each of the senior players before talking with Coach Hawkins.

I mentioned above the Lions played their last regular season home game on Tuesday against Harrisburg, but it won't be their last game just yet.

Carterville has been chosen to host one of the class 3A regionals the week of February 27th. Although the bracket won't be released until 4PM today, it is fantastic that the Carterville School District gets to host another high profile event at our school. the Carterville administration, Todd Rogers, AD Brett Dial and everyone that helps, do a fantastic job in showcasing one of the best high school facilities in the state.

In addition, this year, we will also be live-streaming every regional game on our YouTube page. Scott Hudson and I will have the play-by-play for all of these games in addition to our Lions games on NewsRadio WJPF.

Speaking of which, you can watch tonight's game at Pinckneyville below or you can link to it from the www.cartervillelionathletics.org webpage. Don't forget to subscribe and share to your family and friends. As always, you can listen on NewsRadio WJPF or online at wjpf.com

As always, thank you for reading and LETS GO LIONS!!!
