Well, That Didn't Go As Planned - Indians 34 Lions 20

Turnovers! Offense can't live with em....defense can't live without em.

That pretty much sums up the Lions loss at Du Quoin last Saturday night. Four turnovers doomed the Lions. That and the inability to stop the Indians dual running threat.

The Lions opened up the game on a beautiful night in Southern Illinois with three straight turnovers on their first three possessions. The Indians did what good teams are supposed to do. They scored on the next possession.

The Lions defense did a great job late in the first quarter on in to the second in slowing down the Indians and their offense and that gave the Lions a chance to get the score to within 6 points at one point. But the LIndians running game and big offensive line eventually wore out the Carterville D and the Indians walk away with a HUGE 34-20 win over the Lions. The Indians improved their record to 2-2 on the season and the Lions saw their record fall to 1-3. Hmmm.....sound familiar? It should. Just think back to one year ago.

Exactly one year ago this week, the Carterville Lions were looking at a big game on the road at Anna-Jonesboro. The Lions had a record of 1-3. Going in to that game, Jimmy and I talked about it on our drive to Union County saying that the Lions playoffs season started against AJ.

It took a late-in-the-game touchdown by the Lions in the fourth quarter to win it. What was the play? A fumble recovery and return with 3:19 left in the game. You can listen to the fourth quarter of last years 27-25 win over AJ here. But that game completely turned the Lions season around. They go on to win five games in a row and tie for a conference championship with the Indians and earn a bid to the IHSA playoffs. Of course the Indians get the automatic playoff birth because they beat the Lions.

The very same scenario has presented itself this year. This Lions team has the potential to turn this season around. The formula to win is easy to say, maybe not so easy to execute, but is very simple. No penalties! No turnovers! Beat your man!

Homecoming Week

The Lions are celebrating homecoming this week in Carterville. This can be a distraction for some teams, but the Lions should use this as motivation on the field.

Radio Broadcast

You can hear me and my partner Scott Hudson on NewsRadio WJPF (AM1340) and www.wjpf.com as our pre-game coverage will start at 6:45 and kick-off slated for 7:00 PM.

Live-Stream Video Feed

Last week at Du Quoin, we had a problem with the live-stream on Saturday night. Truthfully, I don't really know what happened. Amy wound up showing the game on my Facebook page, which was pretty cool. https://www.facebook.com/dave.mckenzie

This week we shouldn't have any problems with our stream. Of course you can watch the game here in this post if you would like as well. Feel free to share the link for the game with your family and friends.

Photo's from Carterville @ Du Quoin

My friend, Mike Robertson (from Du Quoin) is one of the best high school sports photographers I've seen. Here is a link to his pictures that he took last week. Keep in mind, he is an Indian fan, lol.

It should be a fantastic high school football game against the Wildcats. Hope to see you there. Let's pack the stadium for homecoming night for our kids.

As always, LETS GO LIONS! #LIONPRIDE
